Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) Non-Medical Help (NMH)

Specialist Mentor - Mental Health and ASC Mentor aims to help with:

  • Provision of support in Higher Education which facilitates competence in self-management of a mental health difficulty or long term health condition.


  • Help students come to terms and understand their diagnosis and any medication they have been prescribed in relation to the impact it may have on their studies.


  • Identification of triggers that can impact a person’s ability to cope with their illness and academic study.


  • Provision of support to develop coping strategies to manage and/or negate the impact of identified triggers.


  • Psychoeducation.


  • Help students to develop and maintain realistic study patterns.


  • Enhance the students ability to overcome barriers to success in Higher Education through empowering the student to self-advocate.


  • Provide the student with a more equal chance to achieve success with attaining positive academic and personal goal success.


  • Support with timetabling, attendance, organisation, planning, goal setting.


  • Understanding and managing self-imposed expectations about appropriate levels of study.


  • Provide motivation and confidence techniques to improve opportunities to succeed in both education and life.


  • Provide support in meetings with academics and faculty.

 A Specialist Mentor can also work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide person centred holistic support. In addition, our Specialist Mentor has extensive experience of working with people who have a diagnosis of ADHD, ASC and/or Au'DHD.
