"Autism is a lifelong developmental disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world. More than one in 100 people are on the autism spectrum and there are around 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK." National Autistic Society, (2024), Available at: What is autism, (Accessed: 2024).
A film produced by the National Autistic Society to inform individuals on what autism is. The film is narrated by Alan Gardner, the Autistic Gardener
In autism sensory information can be experienced in both Hypersensitivity (over-responsiveness) and Hyposensitivity (under-responsiveness).
Bright lights, loud noises, or unfamiliar situations can be overwhelming, stressful, or uncomfortable for autistic individuals.
Autistic individuals may find it hard to communicate and interact with others.
They can struggle to understand how other people think or feel. These difficulties can delay the processing of information (for some individuals it may even take longer).
The most prominent feature of autism are the difficulties with social interaction.
Autistic individuals might find it hard to make connections or will prefer to be entirely alone. Many autistics can appear blunt, rude or disinterested in others without intending to be so.
Autistic people exhibit repetitive behaviours, such as repeating certain actions or phrases. They may follow the same routines every day.
